Male hair is a special type of hair growth that grows in the crown and front of the head. Finasteride (Proscar) has been used for a long time to treat male hair loss and for male pattern baldness, which is the most common type of baldness. Male pattern baldness is the most common hair loss in men. There is no cure for male hair loss, but some of the treatments help men and their partners regrow their hair.
Proscar is taken by mouth. The first and most common dose of this medication is a 5 mg tablet. The other two doses are taken once daily. It is important to take the medication exactly as prescribed. The amount of this medicine in your body needs to be adjusted by your doctor. If you have taken this medication before, you may not have been able to get the dose right. If you are still not able to get the dose right, you should tell your doctor. The dosage of Proscar will depend on the type of hair loss that you have.
Proscar works by blocking the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase, which converts testosterone to DHT. DHT is a hormone produced by the prostate gland that is responsible for causing hair follicles to shrink. It is normally a result of DHT being converted to DHT by a hormone called 5-alpha reductase. By reducing the amount of DHT in the scalp, Proscar helps to slow down or stop hair loss and reduce the risk of further hair loss.
Proscar should be taken 30 minutes to 1 hour before your planned sexual activity. It is important to take this medicine exactly as prescribed by your doctor, even if you start to feel better before the first dose. If you are taking this medication after a full glass of water, you can take it with or without food.
You should be aware that it is possible for your hair loss to affect a lot of people, especially in men. If you have male pattern baldness, you may want to see your GP. They may be able to help you get your hair back and start treatment as soon as possible. If you are unable to get hair back, talk to your doctor about an alternative treatment.

RefreshFinasteride is used to treat men with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and male pattern hair loss, also called androgenetic alopecia. BPH is caused by an enlarged prostate. Men with BPH usually have difficulty urinating, a decreased flow of urination, hesitation at the beginning of urination, and a need to get up at night to urinate. Finasteride will make these symptoms less severe and reduce the chance that prostate surgery will be needed. It may be used alone or in combination with other medicines such as an alpha-blocker to treat BPH. For men with hair loss, finasteride will increase the number of scalp hairs but will not increase the amount of body hair.
Finasteride blocks the action of an enzyme called 5-alpha-reductase. This enzyme changes testosterone to another hormone that causes the prostate to grow or hair loss in males. It will increase testosterone levels in the body, which decreases prostate size and increases hair growth on the scalp. The effect of finasteride on the prostate and scalp will only last as long as the medicine is taken. When it is stopped, the prostate begins to grow again and the hair will be lost.
Share ShareShareFinasteride is used to treat men with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) who have had an enlarged prostate for men only. BPH is known as androgenetic alopecia. BPH is known as male pattern hair loss and hair loss in men. An enlarged prostate can cause male pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia) and hair loss in men. BPH can cause a range of effects on the scalp, hair, and even the heart. The most common cause of hair loss in men is androgenetic alopecia, which is defined as hair loss of any type made up of genetic or environmental factors. Symptoms of androgenetic alopecia can lead to reduced quality of life for men with this condition. For men with BPH, finasteride will increase the number of scalp hairs but will not increase the amount of body hair.
